Amelia Earhart. Portrait of Amelia Earhart (1897- 1937), American aviation pioneer and the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. In 1928 Earhart was the first woman to cross the Atlantic by air as a passenger. In 1932 she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, establishing a new record for the crossing of 13 hours and 30 minutes. In 1935 she became the first woman to fly from Hawaii to California. In 1937 she began to fly eastwards around the world with a navigator, Frederick J. Noonan. They disappeared on 2 July 1937 whilst flying over the Pacific Ocean from New Guinea to Howland Island. No trace of the plane or crew was ever found.
